Debian GNU/kFreeBSD was first released with Squeeze in last february. The “technology preview” label indicated, among other things, that it had a number of limitations when compared with what users would expect: missing features, incomplete functionality, etc.
But it has seen many noteworthy improvements since then. Here are some that I would like to mention:
- Graphical installer support in D-I.
- Userland support for FreeBSD Jails has been imported.
- Userland support for encrypting disk partitions (geli) has been imported.
- FUSE support is now provided by fuse4bsd.
- After NFS daemons and utilities has been packaged, it is finally possible to mount NFS file systems.
- kFreeBSD (kernel of FreeBSD) has seen a number of updates:
- Compiler has been upgraded to GCC 4.6.
- New release (kernel of FreeBSD 8.2) now available in unstable and wheezy.
- Regular snapshots of 9-CURRENT kernel are now provided in experimental. Among many other improvements, this brings in kernel side of ZFS deduplication.
- Wireless support, which was disabled in squeeze due to a bug in ifconfig, has now been enabled in sid and wheezy, then backported to squeeze after it was reported to be functional.
- After devd has been enabled in freebsd-utils, USB drivers and sound drivers are now autoloaded. In addition, allow-hotplug can now be used in /etc/network/interfaces.
- After some discussion with upstream, ABI compatibility with FreeBSD has been restored, and it is now possible to use Debian GNU/kFreeBSD in a chroot under FreeBSD.

When using X in Debian kfreeBSD you need to kill “upowerd” and “gnome-clock-app” because they consume 100% of your CPU.

What is this, a merger of equals? If you want to use Linux, use Linux. If you want to use BSD, use NetBSD.

You appear to think the GNU operating system paired with Linux is just ‘Linux’. Linux is just a kernel that is commonly used with the GNU system. Some Debian devs have just decided to use a different kernel.

is Wheezy targetting FBSD 9? it’s expected to release in Sept 2011, which should be plenty of time to make it in.
I REALLY WANT ZFS DEDUP!

As there is no official schedule for Wheezy yet, my guess is that kFreeBSD (kernel of FreeBSD) 9.0 will make it to the release.
With kFreeBSD 8.3 (which will also support ZFS dedup) being scheduled to release shortly after 9.0, my guess would be that both kernels can make it.
Btw, both kernels can later be backported to Squeeze.

I used dedup in OpenSolaris b134 (whatever the last binary download was) and hit an issue.
I had a crash that required reimporting a valid RAID1 of a 2 TB zpool.
My server had 3 GB RAM. Booting off the CD, it crashed before it could import the data.
I had to use another system with more RAM (8 GB) to get to the data. My data was not lost, but it took > 8 hrs to import.
Dedup saved about 20% for me. It wasn’t worth the downtime to me on my home system.
The dedup savings should be balanced against the cost of RAM to support recovery and recovery time. It will also depend on how much duplication is in your data.
I couldn’t put more RAM into the file server or $$ into buying a new one with enough RAM.

That fbsd 8.2 kernel, is that -STABLE or -RELEASE ?
-RELEASE ships the mps driver MFC’d from -CURRENT, which brings support for the latest h200 RAID cards used in Dell’s r210 poweredge series.
These servers being pretty mainstream, the difference is noteworthy.

8.2.0-RELEASE. Does this version have the driver you need? Otherwise I think other options may be acceptable; could you bring this up in debian-bsd?

The -RELEASE suffix suggests this version should ship the mps driver though.

Are you sure it’s not 8-STABLE that you want? 8.2.0-RELEASE is older.
