Rooting the LG Optimus L3 (and just about any Android model, really)

I recently purchased an LG Optimus L3 (“e400”) mobile phone. I’ve to admit it would be a perfectly fine purchase if it wasn’t for the huge amount of time I had to invest in order for this thing to recognize me as its master. Even though I wanted to install CyanogenMod in it, the device blocked my attempts to install it through ROM Manager. Yes, for some awkward reason LG kept on thinking they still owned the device even after they sold it to me.

Anyway, as none of the rooting instructions for LG Optimus L3 I found on the net worked for me, I figured I should try with the recently-discovered “master key” vulnerability. A bit of research shows there’s very extensive documentation on this hole and how to exploit it, as well as proof-of-concept exploits. But unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find any complete solution to implement this in easy steps.

On the soulders of giants…

After running through the whole manual setup of this exploit (and succesfully rooting my LG Optimus L3), I figured it would be useful if I put the pieces together into a unified script.

So here it is, an exploit for the Android “master key” vulnerability which will give you root access to almost every Android device in existance:

Enjoy. Oh and btw: fuck you LG.

Am trying your script out on wheezy to root my Samsung Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) [the international one], but I don’t get any questions. This is what I put in – [boudiccas:Tue Oct 08 15:39:27 @~/git/mkbreak]$ [2486]>; ./doit.sh ~/programmes/adt-bundle-linux-x86-2013091/sdk/platform-tools
    /usr/bin/unzip
    /usr/bin/python
    /usr/bin/make
, and never get as far as adb booting. Can you help me please get further?
    Thanks
    Sharon.

    • Jeff Epler Says:

I encountered this failure mode too, which left me confused until I read inside doit.sh. The script requires the following programs:
adb aapt jdb unzip python make
at this step in the script, the programs that *are* found are printed and those that are not found are not printed.

for each one that is not printed, (in your case, adb aapt jdb) you need to ensure that it is on your $PATH. Usually these come from your Android SDK. If you’re not sure how to temporarily set your PATH, there are lots of tutorials to be found by a little web searching.

      • Sharon Kimble Says:

Thanks for this Jeff, I’m tearing my hair out with this! I’ve got ‘adt-bundle-linux-x86.zip’ and have looked back in four of them but in none of them can I find ‘jdb’, and its not on my system. Have I got the right package for SDK? And thge script says ‘/build-tools/17.0.0:$PATH’, but mine just says ‘adt-bundle-linux-x86-20130917/sdk/build-tools/android-4.3’.
        Any ideas please?
        Sharon.

Sadly, this did not work on my wife’s Samsung Transform Alpha 2.3.6/FG11. The exploit was able to edit /data/local.prop, but after reboot, the mount -o rw failed. I guess (but didn’t find confirmation) that on this phone /data/local.prop is disabled.

Having failed, is there some way to remove the injected .apk? This phone doesn’t have a ton of storage, so anything I can remove is for the good.

I recently advised someone researching buying a new phone to aim to get something supported by Replicant (http://replicant.us/) – and see their documentation on how easy it is/isn’t to root/reflash the device. Their Wiki also shows how much of the hardware needs non-free blobs to work. Even if they only plan to run CyanogenMod on it, the device should be more friendly to alternative OSes.

Thanks for releasing this tool though, it may help expand the list of potential target devices for Replicant and others.

How about packaging that for Debian?
