GRUB 1.97 released

GNU GRUB 1.97 has just been released.

This release of GRUB is a significant breakthrough compared to GRUB 1.96. Among a long list of improvements, GRUB 1.97 includes support for booting the kernels of FreeBSD, OpenBSD
and NetBSD, it detects the Ext4 filesystem which is commonly used with the kernel Linux, and it implements a robust mechanism for booting from GPT drives, by embedding itself in the BIOS Boot partition.

Thanks so much for adding those long-awaited features !

in my case it’s: lzma compression, ext4-support, password protection support and other few

    Great job !

Please keep on improving it :)

So are we still being pushed to abandon grub 1.x at all costs and move to 2.x? Confused.

    • robertmh Says:

It’s a bit confusing. GRUB 0.97 is GRUB Legacy. GRUB 1.97 is GRUB 2.

Even though we haven’t reached 2.0 (nor 1.0) yet.

      • Jon Says:

Thanks for the clarification. That is indeed (somewhat) confusing. In particular since GRUB2 is a rewrite rather than a progression from GRUB1. But since grub1 doesn’t use 1.x, I guess it’s not as confusing as I first thought.

    Mh, just to clarify this:
    * Add support for loading XNU (MacOS X kernel).
means MacOS X on Intel/EFI hardware, right?
There is no support for MacOS X on PowerPC/OpenFirmware hardware?

    Regards
    Evgeni

    • robertmh Says:

No, it means on x86 running standard BIOS. I think the main target is Apple hardware (when runnning with BIOS interface) but I guess it should work on regular PCs too.

      • zhenech Says:

Apple HW with BIOS? Sounds strange :)
I thought they support EFI only?

Anyways, for me it would have been interesting, when it would work on PowerPC, so waiting again :)

      • robertmh Says:

They support BIOS too by installing an add-on (I think it’s called “Boot Camp”).

However, they mix up this with unrelated things (like hybrid dos/gpt label support), and refer to it as “emulation”, which helps a lot in generating confusion about the whole thing.

Obviously, Apple doesn’t want their products to be identified as PCs, even if they’re selling IBM-PC-compatible devices.

    • phcoder Says:

it works with both EFI and BIOS and boots both MacOSX and Darwin. MacOSX booting on non-Apple hardware fails due to lack of SMC. For it to work on other i386 mods (coreboot and ieee1275) it would need graphics drivers. We already have driver for OLPC (thanks Bean) and I’ll merge it in experimental as soon as I figure how to coerce bzr to import git correctly. As for PowerPC it’s more difficult. I don’t know how much of the code is reusable and it would take time to figure out. Even though I have imac g3, this subject doesn’t interest me a lot at least right now. If someone is interested in implementing it for PowerPC you can contact me, patches are always welcome.
